4 Ways to Help your Adopted & Foster Child Through Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day can be a tough day for children who are adopted or in foster care. They may not get the same attention or gifts as other children. But there are ways to make Mother’s Day special for them.

1. Have a family photo shoot

One way to make Mother’s Day special for your adopted or foster child is to have a family photo shoot. If you have kids, it can be a fun activity for the whole family and if you don’t, it will still be a nice memento of this important day. Start by having your child dress in their favorite outfit. Make sure to include a special note for their mother or father!

If you want to make it extra special, have the kids write their own note and give it to the person receiving mom’s gift on Mother’s Day so that they can read it at the family photo shoot. . Get all of the kids involved by having them tell their favorite memory or story. If you are in the military and this is your first Mother’s Day away from your family, you can surprise your children with a special video message from mom. If you aren’t able to make it home for Mother’s Day, there are plenty of ways to send a message through

2. Do something small but meaningful

Another way is to get your child something small but meaningful, like tickets to an event they love or a new game they’ve been wanting. This will show them that you didn’t forget about the importance of Monther’s Day.

3. Tell them how much you love them & gift them

You could also make Mother’s Day extra special by telling them how much you love them and why they mean so much to you. Adopted kids often treasure this kind of love even more than their biological parents. It’s easy to go overboard on Mother’s Day, but if someone has a small-sized box of chocolates stashed away somewhere in the kitchen, it could be fun to dig it out and surprise them with something they haven’t tried yet.

4. Encourage them to share their feelings

Encourage your adopted child to share their feelings with you and others in safe ways. Monther’s Day is a great opportunity to help them understand that they deserve happiness, too.

Teach them that they are not alone in this world and never will be if they have you in their life! Also, make memories with your adopted child on Monther’s Day. This is the perfect time for a nice family activity! Have them pick out a board game, and go for a walk. Or, have them make their own craft to take home and treasure.
